The majestic Great Wall of China is the greatest ancient military fortification in the world and has been listed in the World Heritage by UNESCO since 1987. Starting from Shanhaiguan Pass in Liaoning Province to Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu Province, Great Wall winds through the mountain and desert areas of northern China from east to west.
The Great Wall was originally built in the Spring, Autumn, and Warring States Periods as a military gigantic defensive fortification by the three states: Yan, Zhao and Qin. The Great Wall went through constant extensions and repairs in later dynasties. Till Qin Dynasty, Emperor Qin Shihuang succeeded in his effort to have the walls joined together to fend off the invasions from the Huns in the north after the unification of China. Since then, the Great Wall has served as a monument of the Chinese nation throughout history
The Great Wall is not merely a wall but instead a complete and rigorous defense project composed of countless passes, watchtowers, garrison towns, beacon towers and blockhouses. These fortifications were arranged in certain ways under the control of the military command system at all levels.
Zigzagging from Shanhaiguan Pass in Liaoning Province to Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu Province, the Great Wall crosses over nine provinces and cities, including Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Hubei, Beijing, Tianjin and Liaoning. Different sections have different splendid sceneries: long rivers, steep mountains, lofty cliffs, boundless desert, vast grasslands and so on.
Having undergone the forces of nature for thousands of years, the Great Wall witnessed the rise and fall of many dynasties and changes on the earth, yet it is still standing proudly in the eastern part of the world.
Nowadays, the Great Wall has lost its military function, but as a great ancient engineering work, its magnificent beauty and austere structure made it become a famous historical scenic spot for tourists, and it plays a role in bridging the friendship between the Chinese people and peoples in different parts of the world.
