Kung-fu Tour: Beijing-Luoyang-Shaolin Temple-Luoyang-Xi'an-Shanghai (13 Days)

Shaolin Kungfu refers to a collection of Chinese martical arts that claim affiliation with the Shaolin Temple. This tour aims to study Shaolin boxing in Wushu School which is located at the home of Shaolin Temple and Shaolin Kungfu. In addition, you will appreciate the historical and cultural highlights of Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai, have a glipms into China’s glorious past and its bright future.

 

Day01/Arrive in Beijing
Arrive in Beijing, the captial of China. Meet your guide at the airport and transefer to the hotel. (No gurantte of the early check-in. The normal check-in time is 14:00.) View the Jingshan Park, also known as Coal Hill, because it is said that the emperor used to keep emergency coal stores inside the mound. Jingshan offers a great view out over the Forbidden City complex. Then, move on to visit Tian'anmen Square, the largest urban square in the world. Tian'anmen was built in 1417 and served as the entrance gate to the Imperial Palace. (L)

Day02/Beijing
Begin the day's activity with a visit to the Imperial Palace, well-known as Forbidden City which is the large scale construction of the palace extended from 1406 to 1420. It was the imperial palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. 24 emperors lived and ruled China from here. In the afternoon, visit Temple of Heaven, built in 1420 A.D., which was originally the platform to offer sacrifices to Heaven during Ming and Qing Dynasties. The buildings and parklands reflect an ancient Chinese thought of "the Heaven is round and the earth is square". (B,L)

Day03/Beijing-Luoyang 
Today's highlight is the visit to the Great Wall, one of the "Seven Wonders of the World" and a symbol of Chinese civilization. Climb Mutianyu Great Wall (excluded Cable Car). Then, drive to the Ming Tombs area where is for 13 deceased emperors of the Ming Dynasty. Visit the Changling Tomb which is the largest of the 13 as you can imagine it is quite impressive. Take an overnight train to Luoyang with soft sleeper (the first class in China, 4 persons sharing one cabin). (B,L)

Day04/Luoyang-Dengfeng (Shaolin Temple)
Arrive in Luoyang in the morning, pick up from the railway sation and have breakfast. Begin today's activity to visit the Shaolin Temple, located at the foot of Songshan Mountain - the central of the five scared mountains in China. The temple was founded in 527 A.D. by a monk, Bodhidharma. He developed a form of physical movement which is based on the natural motions of animals, hence the origin of Shao Lin Kung-fu. The main scenic spots are Permanent courtyard, the Pagoda Forest, the First Founder's Hall, the Second Founder's Hall and Dharma Cave, etc. The Pagoda Forest, a concentration of tomb pagodas for eminent monks and abbots of the temple, shows more than 240 tomb pagodas of various sizes from Tang, Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties (648-1911). Dharma Cave is where Dharma patiently faced the wall and meditated for 9 years, and finally reached the immortal spiritual state and created the Buddhist Zen. (B,L,D) 

Day05/Shaolin 
Learn Shaolin Kungfu in Xiaolong Wushu School. Accommodation is in the Wushu School, with triple rooms sharing. (B,L,D)
Information: Shaolin Kungfu refers to a collection of Chinese martical arts that claim affiliation with the Shaolin Temple. Of the tens of thousands of Kungfu Wushu styles, several hundreds might have some relationship to Shaolin; however, aside from a few very well known systems, such as Xiao Hong Quan, Da Hong Quan, Yin Shou Gun, Damo Sword, etc., it would be almost impossible to estaibalish as verifiable connection to the temple for any one particular art. In Xiaolong Wushu School, you will study some style boxing.

Day06/Shaolin
The mornig is for learning Shaolin Kungfu in the Wushu School.
In the afternoon, take 15 minutes walking to visit Songyang Academy (Songyang Shu Yuan), established during the Northern Wei Dynasty. Songyang Academy was one of the foremost shcools fo classical learning in Imperial China, sending its graduates into many positions in the Chinese Civil Service. There is a 3000-year old cypress tree in the Academy's courtyar, which is believed to be the oldest in China. Accommodation is in the Wushu School, with triple rooms sharing. (B,L,D)

Day07/Shaolin
The mornig is for learning Shaolin Kungfu in the Wushu School.
Pay a visit to Zhongyue Temple in the afternoon (30 minutes walking to reach the temple, or take public bus), a key national temple of Taoism, located on the Songshan Mountain. It was first established in the third century BC, and began to flourish after Empress Wu Zetian came here for worship in 688. The temple had been repaired many times and had 900 rooms of various buildings by 1013, but subsequently declined to a certain extent. Now, there are over 400 rooms, covering an area of 100,000 square meters. It is the extant ancient Taoist architectural complex that is the most complete and has the largest scale. The main buildings include the Zhonghua Gate and the Tianzhong Pavilion, etc., spanning 6,500 meters from south to north. There are many precious cultural relics in the temple. Especially, its numerous inscriptions on tablets, the Main Hall that is the most grandiose building in the Zhongyue Temple. Accommodation is in the Wushu School, with triple rooms sharing. (B,L,D)

Day08/Shaolin-Luoyang
Learn Shaolin Kungfu in the morning in the Wushu School.
In the afteroon, pay a visit to one Cast Sword Factory. Then, drive back to Luoyang for overnight. (B,L,D)

Day09/Luoyang-Xi'an
After breakfast, pay a visit to Longmen Grottoes, built in the year of 494, during the Northern Wei Dynasty. The Longmen Grottoes is one of China's three leading treasure houses of grotto art, with 2,100 grottoes. The largest Buddhist sculpture stands 17.14 meters tall. Then, pay a visit to Luoyang Folk Art Museum, built up in 1744 in the Qing Dynasty, exhibiting objects on folk beliefs, weddings, birthday celebrations and folk art. Ride a train to Xi'an with hard seat. As regards the number of dynasties and span of time, Xi'an served as an ancient capital beyond compare. Transfer to the hotel on arrival. (B,L)

Day10/Xi'an
Begin the day's activity with an once-in-a-lifetime viewing of the extraordinary Terracotta Warriors and Horses, 2,200-year-old underground army of he first feudal Emperor, Qin Shihuang. Life size terracotta figures of warriors and horses arranged in battle formations are the star features at the museum. Then, pay a visit to Big Wild Goose Pagoda, originally built in 652 A.D. in Tang Dynasty (618-907A.D.), it functioned to collect large volume of Buddhist scriptures that were taken from India by the eminent monk of Xuanzang. Day11/Xi'an-Shanghai 
After breakfast, visit Forest of Steles Museum, with 900 years of history, it 3,000 pieces of the earliest stone steles of different periods, from the Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. Taka an afternoon flight to Shanghai, known as "Paris in the East". Transfer to the hotel on arrival. (B,L)

Day12/Shanghai 
Pay a visit to Yuyuan Garden, a well-restored Suzhou-style garden, which was specially built for Pan's parents as a place to enjoy themselves a tranquil and happy time in their old age. The pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds and cloisters are unique characteristic. And also take a walk through Chenghuangmiao (known as Yuyuan Garden Market) built in the fifteenth century during the Ming Dynasty. It filled with antique markets and specialty stores. Then, visit Jade Buddha Temple, built in 1882 to keep two jade Buddha statues which had been brought from Burma by a monk named Huigen. The two precious jade Buddha statues, one sitting Buddha and one Recumbent Buddha, are carved with whole white jade. Move on to visit the Bund, at the west shore of the Huangpu River, the splendid row of early 20th century Europe buildings remains the quintessential Shanghai sight. Roam around Nanjing Road, a must-see metropolitan destination attracting thousands of fashion-seeking shoppers from all over the world today. (B,L,D)

Day13/Depart from Shanghai 
Transfer to the airport, and prepare for boarding on your homebounf flight. (B)

2. Xiaolong Wushu School only provides triple sharing accommodation. You could choose to stay in the hotels near the Wushu School. Please let us know if you have this kind requests.  
3. The price is not suitable during the special dates, including Shaolin Temple International Martial Arts Festival (Sep. 5-15, 2009), National Day (Oct. 1-8, 2009), Luoyang Penoy Festival (Apr. 5-May 10, 2009). We keep the right to re-quote if the itinerary confronts above dates.
