Badain Jaren Desert, lied in the west of the Alasha Plateau in Inner Mongolia, covers 44,000 square kilometers, ranking the third in China and the fourth in the world. Most of the area of the desert is composed of large un-vegetated or sparsely vegetated dunes.

The dune's name (Mingshashan) comes from the booming noise made by the sands when people climb up. The spring's name (Yueyaquan) comes from its crescent from, cradled in the dunes. After hundreds of years, they always exist without ever being buried by the sand.
On one side of the Yellow River is the Loess Plateau and the other side is the Tengger Desert. The vast desert, long river, high mountain and oasis together make a magnificent sight.
