Shapotou - Slowing the steps of the Drifting Sands
Shapotou is ranked as one of the "China's Five Most Beautiful Deserts" by China National Geography Magazine.
Shapotou is located in the southeast of Tegger Desert, Zhongwei County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China, and lies north of the Yellow River.
On one side of the Yellow River is the Loess Plateau and the other side is the Tengger Desert. The vast desert, long river, high mountain and oasis together make a magnificent sight.
A majestic, infinite sea of yellow sand, trimmed with a wide belt of green. At Shapotou stands a dune one hundred meters high; southward-facing, the dune curves inward at its center. When tourists go sand-sledging, the sand thunders, giving rise to the name Shapo Mingzhong - "Sounding Bell and the Sand Slope".
The Baotou-Lanzhou Railway, built 50 years ago, has become part of the scenery. Shapotou epitomizes the harmonious coexistence of man and desert adapting to the laws of nature. The sand-fixing miracle made by the desert-control experts for safety along the railway has spread the name of Shapotou throughout the world.
