
Nyingchi, "throne of the sun" in Tibetan, is located in southeast Tibet, where the Himalaya Mountains and Nyainqentanglha Mountains extend from west to east, like parallel huge dragons, to join the Hengduan Mountains in the east. It is adjacent to Yunnan and Qamdo to the east and northeast, Naqu to the north, Lhasa to the west and Shannan to the southwest. With green mountain slopes, snow-capped peaks and crystal-clear rivers, Nyingchi looks just like heaven on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.
On the lower reaches of the Yalutsanpo River in southeast Tibet, Nyingchi is some 3,000 meters above sea level. It has a moist weather and a beautiful natural scene. The Monba and Lhoba ethnic people living here have their own unique habits and customs. The Namjagbarwa Peak, the world-known Yalutsanpo Canyon, the Lake Pagsumtso, Chayu and Bome attract tourists from home and abroad with their unique natural sceneries.
Nyingchi enjoys exceptional advantages in human and natural tourist resources. The Nyingchi residents are striving to build the area into an international forest park at the world's "third pole," where people can travel, climb mountains and cliffs, explore, drift along rivers and conduct scientific investigations. The distinctive folklore, music, songs, dances and athletic competitions of this area also add color to the beautiful scenery. There are 8 scenic zones and 35 scenic spots in the Nyingchi area.
The primitive forest of Nyingchi is well preserved in which one can easily find the upright ancient plateau Tibetan cypress, the Himalaya cold cedar, the "living plant fossil" - the tree bracken and a vast variety of azaleas. Nyingchi is therefore entitled "the Natural Museum" and "the Natural Gene Pool". The area around the Buqun Lake is deemed to be the place where the wild man was living.
Nyingchi boasts both gorgeous natural beauty and profound ethnic cultures. Nyingchi has become an international forest park in "the third pole of the globe" where a wide variety of activities such as sightseeing, mountain hiking, rock climbing, exploration, white water surfing and scientific research are carried out. Its unique ethnic living customs, music and dances, sports and tournaments and so on and so forth are among the major tourist attractions.
Yarlong Tsangpo Grand Canyon
Yarlong Tsangpo River, originating from a glacier on the northern Himalayas, is the highest river on the earth with an average altitude of 4,000 meters. The river is the largest river in Tibet and the sixth longest in China.
Yarlong Tsangpo Grand Canyon in Nyingchi lies near Mount Namjagbarwa where Brahmaputra River turns. It is the longest valley with it length of 496 kilo meters and its depth reaches 5,382m. The valley is home to varieties of species, due to its wide range of sea levels. The biggest height difference on the single side is 7,057 meters and the narrowest part only 35 meters. It is the No. 1 Grand Canyon in the world with the latitude of over 3,000 meters
The Yarlong Tsangpo Grand Canyon, covered with ice and snow, embraces the mountains and peaks in the Najiaba Peak area. It constitutes a passage for the moisture from the Indian Ocean to the inner mountainous region which helps make the southeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau a piece of green oasis. The complex and unique geographic and climate conditions provide Tibet a museum of wildlife. Rare and unique plants and animals exist only in this area on the earth.
The Yarlong Tsangpo Grand Canyon is a world-class scenic spot in Tibet and it is of the same significance as the Potala Palace and Zhumulangma. Used to be a treacherous canyon hidden in inner Tibet, it has been "rediscovered" today as a new and challenging tourist destination in the east of the world.
Basumtso Lake
Basumtso, hiding in the deep valley of the upper reaches of the River Ba, 50 km from the the Gongbujiangda County Nyingchi, is a famous holy lake and land for the Red Sect at the latitude of over 3,700 meters.
As a gem in south Tibet, Basumtso's beauties inspire imagination of anyone who comes here. The flowers in spring, green trees in summer, golden fruits in autumn and white snow in winter all suggest that this is real "Jiangnan of Tibet" and a paradise for both the immortals and the human beings.
Basumtso, also called Cuogao Lake, is a fantastic lake that hides among the mountains and valleys in southeast Tibet. Thanks to its humid weather and mountainous topography, Basumtso boasts a piece of very dense forest. Bored of snow mountains and bare Gobi, the locals like spending their holidays in Nyingchi.
The scenic zone with the Basumtso Lake at its center includes two villages of Xueka and Basumtso; the major attractions are the Arpei Manor, the Watch Tower, the Changjing Stone Tablet the Basumtso Temple and the like. Its vast area and mild topography make the lake an ideal place for aquatic recreations like angling.
The Huge Cypress Nature Reserve
Huge cypresses, also known as Yarlung Tsangpo River cypresses for being peculiar to the river area, are commonly seen along the Yarlung Tsangpo River and the lower reaches of the Nyang River.
As the largest and oldest tree in the forest, it is believed to be the 'life tree' of Tonpa Shenrab, founder of Bon . The cypress forest is venerated as a holy land by the local Bonpos, and throughout it you can see colorful prayer flags hanging from the trees, as well as piles of mani stones.
The Huge Cypress Nature Reserve in Baji Town, Nyingchi County, is a complete forest of huge cypress trees. Among these cypress trees, one is 46 meters tall and is about 2,000-2,500 years old by inference and is respected as the sacred tree by the local people. As the largest and oldest tree in the forest, it is believed to be the 'life tree' of Tonpa Shenrab, founder of Bon . The cypress forest is venerated as a holy land by the local Bonpos, and throughout it you can see colorful prayer flags hanging from the trees, as well as piles of mani stones.
