The official name for the currency in China is Renminbi (abbreviated as RMB, the "people's money") with denominations of the yuan, jiao, and fen, which bear a relationship to each other somewhat like the U.S. dollar, dime, and penny. 1 Yuan=10 Jiao (in 1, 2 & 5) = 100 Fen (in 1, 2 & 5). In China, foreign exchange, which offers similar rate to the Banks. Hong Kong's currency is the Hong Kong dollar, whilst Macau's is the Pataca.

Counterfeit bills are a problem in China. Very few Chinese will accept a 50 Yuan or 100 Yuan without first checking to see whether or not it is a fake. Notes that are old and tattered are also sometimes hard to spend. If you are having problems with a note, exchange it for a new one or small change at the Bank of China - counterfeits, however, will be confiscated.

RMB is not traded on international markets and can be officially purchased or exchanged only in China.
