Shanghai Brief
Shanghai, China's largest modern city, is one of the four municipalities under the jurisdiction of the Central Government. Renowned as the "Oriental Paris", Shanghai is China's commercial and financial center. It is a flourishing international metropolis, known worldwide for its highly developed industry, commerce, and finance and its convenient land, air and sea transportation, rich tourist resources, great variety of food, and recreational facilities. The central Huangpu River and the Bund are the best points to appreciate the thriving scene unfolding in Shanghai.

 

Top Attractions

The Bund: a famous waterfront and regarded as the symbol of Shanghai for hundreds of years. The most attractive sight which is at the west side of the Bund are the 52 various buildings of different architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, and the Renaissance. The wide riverfront promenade on the east bank of the river provides a captivating view of Shanghai, particularly at night.

Yuyuan Garden: maybe the most celebrated classical Chinese garden in Shanghai, it has more than 40 attractions in the inner and outer gardens, both built in the Ming Dynasty classical style, divided into six parts by five boundary walls, including Grand Rockery, Flower Pavilion, Hall of Heralding Spring, Hall of Jade Magnificence, Inner Garden, and Lotus Pool. The exquisite layout, beautiful scenery, and the artistic style of the garden architecture have made the garden one of the highlights in Shanghai.

Jade Buddha Temple: the construction of the temple is in the magnificent architectural style of the Song Dynasty. Two precious jade Buddhist status which kept here are not only rare cultural relics but also porcelain artworks, both the Sitting Buddha and the Recumbent Buddha are carved with whole white jade. The sparkling and crystal-clear white jade gives the Buddhas the beauty of sanctity and make them more vivid.

Oriental Pearl TV Tower: with a giddy height of 468 meters, Oriental Pearl TV Tower is the world's third tallest TV Tower. The design of the Tower incorporates eleven spheres and three gigantic columns liking the green grass below to the blue sky above. In the tower, there is a double-decker elevator, which can hold fifty people at a time, and a two-speed elevator that can run at a speed of 7 meters per second. The sightseeing floor in the brilliant upper sphere is 263 meters high and 45 meters in diameter; it is the best place to get a bird's eye-view of Shanghai.

Jin Mao Building: it is the tallest building in China, the second tallest in Asia, and is currently the third tallest building in the world. With an east-meets-west design signifying Shanghai's emergence as a modern global city, Jin Mao follows the multi-use paradigm, it includes modern offices, a deluxe 5-star hotel - the Grand Hyatt Shanghai, exhibition halls, banquet halls, an observation deck, and entertainment facilities. There is a viewing platform up on the 88th floor, which can hold 1000 people at any one time. It is impressive from wherever you are in the city and when you are right next to it.

Shanghai Museum: together with the museums in Beijing, Xi'an, Nanjing, the four are honored as the China's four major museums. The Shanghai Museum building has a circular upper storey but square ground floor, symbolizes the ancient idea of a round heaven and a square land. Shanghai Museum has been famous for its large collection of rare cultural piece. The museum now houses over 120,000 pieces of cultural relics in twelve categories, including Chinese bronze, ceramics, paintings and calligraphy, and artifacts.

It has two main airports, with Pudong the main international gateway and Hongqiao serving most domestic flights. Shanghai has developed into China's largest commercial city since the first half of the 20th century. The main shopping streets Nanjing Road as well as Huaihai Road offer so many international brand-names.
