Leshan brief

Leshan, about 120km from Chengdu, is located on the southwestern fringe of Sichuan Basin. In 1996, Mount Emei including the Leshan Giant Buddha, the largest stoen-carved Buddha in the world, was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Mount Emei is located in the city of Emeishan which is governed by Leshan.

Leshan Giant Buddha: Leshan Giant Buddha lies at the confluence of Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi Rivers. The Giant Buddha is a 71 meters high sculpture carved into one of the large cliffs by the river. Its head itself is 14.7 meters high. Its ear is 6.2 meters long, eye 3.3 meters wide, and shoulder 34 meters wide. Its head is covered with 1,021 chignons. Its middle finger is 8.3 meters long, and each of the feet are 11 meters long and 8.5 meters wide, large enough to accommodate more than 100 people sitting on it, the smallest toenail can accommodate a seated person. The huge figure sits with his hands resting on his knees, his head reaching the hilltop and his feet the river, occupying the entire hillside. According to a local saying: "The mountain is a Buddha and the Buddha is a mountain." To see the giant Buddha Statue, you can take ferry from the dock. The ferry will cross the river and stop in front of the statue for 10 minutes for everyone to go to the top deck and take pictures and then return to the dock.
Mount Emei: The charming scenery has won Mount Emei the name of "Emei, the Greatest Beauty under Heaven". It is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China. Emei Shan has been a Buddhist sanctuary since the third century when disciples of the Puxian form of Buddhism came and built temples to the Bodhisatva. In the ninth century, further temples were built when a delegation sent by a Song Dynasty emperor returned from India and stopped at Emei Shan. The Ming Dynasty also saw restoration of many temples as well as conversion of ancient Taoist temples to Buddhism. Mount Emei is well-known for its enjoyable natural scenery, extensive Buddhist culture, abundant range of species and unique landform.
Recommended tour
Leshan and Mount Emei are on the same tour route, highway is a convenient transportation way. The peak season is summer months from May to October. It will take 2 days at least to visit these two spots. Drive from Chengdu and visit Leshan Giant Buddha, proceed to stay overnight in Mount Emei on the first day. On the next day, visit Mount Emei, and drive back to Chengdu in the afternoon. If you want to take hiking in the mountain, add some time there, there are also cable car for no hiking.

Bamboo Leaf Green Tea is famous throughout the world. There are also many local production worthy of buying: silkworm cocoon, white wax, bamboo shoot, and variety of Chinese Medicine. Other souvenirs include: the clay sculpture of Leshan Giant Buddha, bamboo carvings, prayer beads, Buddha statues, and some Buddhism open-light souvenirs.
